To become a member, a dentist must complete an accredited orthodontic program, be a member in good standing of the American dental Association, and have a practice exclusively in orthodontics. The American dental Association requires orthodontists to have at least two academic years of advanced specialty training in orthodontics in an accredited program, after graduation from dental school. There are 14,600 members.
