Dental Care at Home
Dental care at home is a relatively simple process. It’s just a question of having the right tools and products for the job, and the right information for using those tools and products. Believe it or not, most people are lacking when it comes to their own dental care at home.
You’ve probably been instructed to brush your teeth twice a day from the time that you were a small child. Brushing at least twice a day is essential, but brushing after each meal is better. You’ve also been told to floss when you brush. Even if you cannot brush more than twice a day, you should definitely take the time to floss after each meal.
There is more to good dental care than brushing and flossing. Make sure that when you brush, you are using ADA approved toothpaste. Your dentist will probably recommend the right toothpaste for you, as well as the right floss. Have your dentist show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth, including cleaning your gums and tongue.
Obviously, you will want to have mouthwash on hand. Mouthwash is meant to do more than make your breath fresh – so a breath spray is not nearly as effective as a mouthwash. With a mouthwash, you can freshen your breath, kill germs, and even loosen particles that you missed while brushing and flossing. Some people will actually rinse with a good mouthwash vigorously before brushing and flossing.
Invest in a dentist’s mirror. These are the small pen type mirrors that you can place inside your mouth, and looking in your bathroom mirror, you can actually see the back of your teeth, as well as those hard to see back teeth. These mirrors can be purchased at most discount stores. Make sure that you clean it well after each use.
Talk to your dentist about tooth whitening products. You may have dental work that will not benefit from these products. Your dentist may have a brand or type that he prefers for you. Always ask about these products before using them, and then select products that are ADA approved.
Your dental care provider will help you to take good care of your teeth and gums, but good dental care always starts at home.
